Japan: the anti-rotterland
The fertility rate is 1.27. What to do? How about sow the seeds for a more sexualised Japanese culture, one with more lust and desire, in an attempt to situate relationships as more desirable than the latest computer game?

N. Korea Consultations...

Since I'm in the consulting business, I thought I'd pass along this bit of Korean consulting news. The South Koreans want to get together with the Russian Bear, the Japanese Samauri, the Chinese Monolith, and us Yanks for, ah, a "consultation" on North Korea. I'm willing to host it in my flat in the center of North America. What should I prepare?
Note: the pic is of the North Korean -- ahem -- Friendship Wall. For some reason it appears as though the gate keeper is winking at us?

Just when you thought you had heard all of Japan's weirdnesses...
there comes another completely random, impossible one. God, those people are fascinating.

Mooning the Grim Reaper
Why would you go from Hiroshima to Nakasaki in August, 1945, to get nuked a second time? Oh well, this man did it, and now he's 93, and still kicking. Good for him. Seethe, Darwin, seethe.

RapeLay
RapeLay, one of the latest video games from Japan. Let this game exist, as efforts to ban videogames have, historically, only served to popularize them. The reason it should be allowed to exist stems from a similar reason holocaust deniers and KKK'ers should be allowed to have the freedom to speak: to censor one invariably leads to censoring all, and the real thing to do is continuously stand up and tell these video-game developers what pieces of shit they are for making a game that encourages rape. Maybe an Islamic version of the game would have the village elders stoning the victim, post rape?
Unbelievable.
Unbelievable.

The Mark of The Kiyoshi Ito

"Kiyoshi Itô is the first winner of the Gauss Prize for applications of mathematics. The new prize is named for Carl Friedrich Gauss, one of the greatest mathematicians of all time, whose work demonstrated the ability to apply mathematics to many sorts of problems in physics, astronomy and engineering. The prize is awarded jointly by the Deutsche Mathematiker-Vereinigung (DMV = German Mathematical Union) and the International Mathematical Union (IMU), and administered by the DMV. It consists of a medal and a monetary award (currently valued at 10,000 Euros).
Kiyoshi Itô, aged 90, received the prize for his work on stochastic analysis, allowing the study of stochastic processes by means of what are now known as "stochastic differential equations." These have found applications all over science, and also, perhaps most famously, in mathematical finance via the Black-Scholes equations. Though Itô first developed these ideas in the 1940s, it took quite a while for mathematicians to understand and appreciate his results. Only after 1954, when Itô visited the Institute of Advanced Studies, did his ideas begin to have their true impact. Today, stochastic analysis is a basic tool in the study of stochastic processes and plays a crucial role in many branches of applied mathematics. "An Early Nice Use of Ito's Integral

Japanese toilets
Can anyone explain how does use wooden sticks for these purposes? I cannot use chopsticks for eating (I always ask for a fork in a Japanaese restaurant). Wiping my ass with them sounds even harder: Wooden sticks called chu-gi were used as a sort of toilet paper. In earlier days seaweed was used for cleaning, but by the Edo period, these had been replaced by toilet paper made of washi. In the mountainous regions, wooden scrapers and large leaves were used too.

Khan On the Japanese Sumo Circuit
I caught this bout last evening in a modern Mongolian ger, electicity powering the television and sound system, vodka shots and piva flowing, all while the wood-burning stove kept us warm from the Siberian cold beyond the felt walls.
