"Most vegetarians look so much like the food they eat that they can be classified as cannibals."
"Like most poets, preachers, and metaphysicians, he burst into conclusion at a spark of evidence."

Hitchens Gives an Early Christmas Present to Foxhole Atheists
The point, or idea, in the argument most important is what is required to maintain a healthy Republic: the divide between Church and State. This not only so that the Church doesn't impose itself on the State, but also so that the State doesn't impose itself on the Church. It's a worthwhile ideal.
Here's a nifty excerpt:
"I am still not going to give any real names of [the atheist or agnostic] cadets attending my little event: there were about 20 of them, mostly males. Two of the group, one Baptist and one Mormon, had given up their faith since enlisting at the academy. The others fluctuated between doubt and agnosticism and straight-out unbelief. They were good-humored, outspoken, and tough-minded: the sort of people who make you proud of being defended by a volunteer military."
And on that note, an early Happy Christmas to FCP'ers as well.

Hume, I mean Hitchens, Comes to America?
I plan on having a showing of this, with the following demographic in my flat: 1 super Catholic Pittsburgh Pole (w/ Ph.D. in Rhetoric from Duquesne), 1 Organic/Yeoman Farmer (NoDak native, and ABD in Geography from UC-Berkeley), 1 agricultural attorney (U of Minnesota-Twin Cities J.D., Minnesota native), 1 English professor (another NoDak native, ethnic German-from-Russia), and myself.
With an easterner present, there'll be plenty of bourbon shots. And with a Californian present, plenty of fine red wine. With the other three, plenty of beer and ethnic eastern Europa and Scandinavian vodka swilling to temper our comments toward one another. If any FCP'ers can make it, by all means, by all means. We're going to also have a verbal abuse fountain running the entire time. This is the type of dialog that ought to be happening in American University. Sometimes I truly think I should've been born in either Edinburgh, or the British American Colonies, circa 1759. But at least their inspiration lives on. Looks like a damn good documentary from all sides. In addition to the video clips, here is more written exegesis.

Hitch contra Polanski & Applebaum
Here's some thought for one and all: I've always agreed how the Political Right could thunder against the likes of a Polanski, but was always confused when they somehow couldn't thunder against pederasts more broadly, whether they have a white little collar on; or for conservative Muslims, whether they sing into a megaphone 5-times/day or not.
The closing zinger paragraph of the article: In Iran—where the Islamic revolution originally lowered the age of marriage to 9—the minimum age is currently 13, though this is not among the laws that the Revolutionary Guards are especially zealous in enforcing. You may, if you wish, try to make a case for cultural relativism—different standards for different societies and traditions—but the plain fact is that the Prophet Mohammed was betrothed to his favorite wife Aisha when she was 6 and took her as his wife when she was 9, and this gives an "empowering" effect to those who like things to be this way and to keep it legal. Meanwhile, a leading prince of the American Roman church sits in the Vatican as a cardinal, having for decades facilitated and covered up the institutionalized sodomizing of the underage. I would rather live in a country where children are protected and their predators prosecuted, and even (which in Hollywood is evidently not always
the same thing) disapproved of.
