No war has been fought without atrocities on both sides.

Not all wars have been fought with atrocities on both sides, and not so many with such a massive scale of atrocities.
What is deeply depressing however is the ease with which civilization collapses into atrocity. Even more so, into revelling in atrocity.
Aftwerwards come the self serving lies and the refusal to admit the Truth of things.

The German military were relatively clean, outside of Russia.

Yeah, though. War brings out the worst in people, and almost as a rule. Wars of religion seem to really go that way...
