Anne Applebaum stands up for a scumbag

Applebaum is a pretty fierce defender of anyone who has ever been punished for ethnic reasons, and I wonder if this isn't why she said what she said about Polanksi. Still, if Polanski had his way with Applebaum's daughter, her opinion piece might come down a bit differently. I do wonder what in the world the girl's mother was doing in handing her 13 year old daughter over to a provocative film director, too, though. Polanski isn't really making Disney type flicks (which, arguably, are more disturbing).

First, did you read about the big conflict of interest Applebaum has in this story? If she had the integrity I thought she had, she should have put that info about her husband in the article somewhere (I for one had no idea who her husband was).

Second, what does anyone's ethnicity has anything to do with anything in this crime? (Yes, rape of a 13-year old is a crime. Period.) If she starts making judgments like this on a tribal basis, why should I listen to her?

And third, who gives a damn about what the mother's motives were? The guy attacked a 13-year girl after plying her with alcohol and drugs, and then sexually assaulted her in all possible ways. I mean, if that's not an automatic 10-20 years in the slammer (next to Bubba), I don't know what is.

Yes, you're correct Tecs. My comments were not meant to suggest Polanski should be exonerated. I'm merely trying to understand Applebaum's point of view on this matter, and she does have a view I disagree with.

Maybe I was too harsh on her. I'd like to think she just got carried away, and let her personal connections or whatever take the better part of her judgment on this one. Happens to everyone now and then --one should not cast the first stone. Still, she should listen to criticism, and respond somehow.
