Thanks, JJ, for the youtube link. Though I'd seen bits and pieces of Rudy's speech, I'd missed this part, which looks like the best one. Wow! How come he woke up only now, after sleep-walking through the primaries?

Good question. The whole speech is on youtube. I watched his and Palin's over again today to see how my perceptions went. Night of the speeches I thought Palin was as good as if not better than Giuliani. Not today. Some of that was expecting a disaster and instead getting something quite good. But Giuliani was a killer.
How he blew the primaries is weird, but I think some of it is that you and I have lived in the NE and we're used to that in-your-face mocking. We like it and think it's funny. In the nice states, it turns people off. I bet that at the convention people thought Palin's speech was much better than Rudy's and would still think so watching it again. The mockery is nicer somehow.

But, are you sure he was mocking anyone during the primaries? From what I recall, he went underground sometimes in late Fall, not to reappear until the Florida primary, by which time it was way too late. So, I don't think it was his big mouth that sunk his chances, but rather his sleepwalking. A pity. I still like him, and I still would have liked a more lively primary. Both he and Fred Thomson (another sleep-walker, except for a week in SC when he woke up) were a letdown. Ah well, perhaps it goes to show we do need a younger breed. I just wish the young turks were more kulturny.
