McCain has gambled boldly on Palin. If she flops, McCain could lose by a landslide. On the other hand, if Palin exceeds expectations, and her selection ends up looking both bold and wise, McCain could win.

Yep, that's the dilemma. Question is: was McCain so desperate that he had to take such a huge gamble? His ads highlighting Obama's lack of substance were just starting to pay off -- now he threw away that line of attack. He's betting the farm on this Palin girl. What are the odds he will be proved right?

The horror, the horror! What was JJ doing in 1984?

On a more substantial note -- one of Palin'
s few claims to fame is that she stood up to the "bridge to nowhere", and said "thanks but no thanks" to Congress. But apparently there is less than meets the eye in this story. And she ain't got many legs to stand on...

Somehow, this furore reminds me of the time W bush nominated one of his cronies for the Supreme Court -- Myers was her name. As I recall, JJ fell into lockstep behind that nomination, praising her many qualities. But I opposed it, based on the lack of qualifications (so did AA, if I recall correctly), and, in the end, W rightly changed his mind (under some pressure), and nominated Alito -- an infinitely better choice.

Now, I don't say history repeats itself -- it never quite does -- but it looks to me that there are shades of the Myers debacle in here. Perhaps not immediately apparent, but we'll see.

AI, I must admit I see no connection with the Myers case. Myers was a longtime crony of Bush's, who had proved average to inept at everything she had dabbled in, whether in law or politics. Whatever Palin is, she is clearly no crony of McCain, has succeeded [as much as a place like Wasilla, AK, can allow you to succeed] in doing constructive and challenging things in her life, even before becoming Governor. And, by all accounts, she has been a capable governor.
She is also someone who can help McCain get elected. Or, as may prefer, can help prevent the election of Obama.
AI, I get the impression you think Sarah is some sort of northwest "redneck" [in the Pepean sense of "ricain SBJ lovin' moron"]. She is definitely one who has gotten a red neck from an outdoors life, and that is certainly part of the Northwest. She's proudly ricain, and she is very Christian. But I'd bet you 20 bottles of vintage port [to 20 bottles of whatever Roumanian vintage you esteem most highly] that she is one sharp, hardheaded, cookie.
Hey, you have time this Wednesday evening to get together for a bite and talk about this sort of stuff?

Don't ask about Roumanian vintages, AA. You'll get an old Pepsi bottle of stuff distilled from plums mixed with Coanda fuel.
