Yes. A man who destroyed so many people's lives, with malice aforethought, deserves no special protection because of "blood". His actions prove his corruption. If his sons had acted so as to perpetuate these actions, they would have been proven corrupt [as his wife proved to be]. Yes, I would have turned in my father for such crimes.

Madoff stinks to high heaven. The irony is that he was "turned in" years (and even decades) ago, by several people, but nothing happened. The fix was in, no doubt.

there is no question it was the right thing to do, but I can't imagine this to be an easy decision to make: i am surprised that they ratted him out the next day, suggesting little conflict.

Well, we can speculate as to the rapidity of their decision. It could be that they were struck hard by the enormity of it all. Or, less charitably, they had already known about it sooner but had held off to let Mama get some cash, or....
For now, until we hear otherwise, I'll take the info on the timing at face value.... But Tecs is absolutely right, there were clear indications and warnings on this back in the mid 90s.
