Ward Churchill and the dangers of simplistic history

Clay Jenkinson discusses Ward Churchill's ignorant interpretation of the historical record.

note: The archaeological record tells us that the Mandan and Hidatsa have occupied the banks of the upper Missouri since at least the 15th century. They were oh so friendly, and they often greeted pepe's ancestors with open arms, feasts, and great trade deals.

Pepe,

I'm curious about your comment. Could you elaborate? (note: please forgive me as I've been out in the field for the last week and a half and am unable to keep up with the blog on a regular basis.)

>>That's what makes Churchill so dangerous. Instead of exploring the messy flux of American history he prefers a simplistic picture in which Indians are uniformly innocent and good, while the white conquerors are uniformly evil and in this case genocidal.

mft - this is what i understand ai's post to be about. exactly a john wayne story but upside down. we had an exchange on the topic a while back and i am interpreting this post as setting up a straw man to make a counterpoint.

Is Pepe suggesting Ward "Bravo of the Colorado" Churchill is a Scarecrow? Or is he acknowledging the substance that lies between the Wardian ears? Or is he accusing AI of daring to give unto Le Pew what Le Pew gave unto AI?

Yes, as AA said, even a bit more clarity if you could Pepe. I've bumped your latest draft up to about a C+. Let's shoot for an A, or at least a B+.
