He worked actively to destroy all legitimacies of order, by deploying weapons of de-civilization not used so frankly for thousands of years. He exacerbated the standing dilemma of an America deserted by the United Nations, but left to enforce the integrity of an international law which too few truly wanted enforced. And he brought unbearable dilemmas to Iraq's unfortunates, hopeless souls not knowing whether it was worse to spare themselves or survive on complicity in the deaths of Americans and their own unknowing countrymen.

with the expansion of shiite and sunni militias handling much of the killings, i'm curious to see whether that'll have any incidence on the level of violence.

even if it doesn't make much of a difference in the end, taking out this guy was all good. now he needs to be burried in a pig's skin.

The BBC sums it up nicely:

US President George W Bush declared then: "A hopeful day has arrived. All Iraqis can now come together and reject violence and build a new Iraq."

His close ally UK Prime Minister Tony Blair echoed his words: "Let his capture bring about unity, reconciliation and peace between all the people of Iraq."

It did not happen, as we have seen.

It did not happen in good part thanks to the vicious murders and mayhem that Zarky embarked upon (not quite cheered on overtly by the Left, but, I suspect, in pectore). At any rate, with him out of the picture, Iraq will have a fighting chance. Too little, too late? Perhaps, but I'll take it. It's gonna be a Long War (possibly longer than La Guerre de Cent Ans), so any ray of hope counts.

Zarky dead is an unalloyed good. However, as startling as it may seem, I am in agreement with Pepe on this one...ask me after the WC as to why!

AA: agreement on what? I'm waiting for details. In the meantime, let us savor the moment: it's not often that one sees the Beast brought down. For this to happen just the day after 6/6/06 sounds like a good omen to me. After that, que sera, sera. It's a long, long way to Tiperrary -- winning one for the Gipper now and then is good for the soul.

Watch for the bouncing Chechs: my Polish friend tells me they beat hands down the Germans recently. How much to read into that?

I understand your sentiments vis a vis the escargot eaters, but what about the Spaniards? Something to do with the Zapatero double-cross, or is this a far more ancient feud?

By the way, who is JJ rooting for? Methinks the azzuri, but who knows with him -- looks like he's gone into hibernation for the Summer, in one of those backwaters, nested among an odd number of hills.

I agreed with Pepe that the death of Zarqawi is very unlikely to resolve the warfare in Iraq. Why can wait for later...But zapping zarky was a great and necessary thing, and if our forces act quickly we might be able to so cripple the terrorist structures that Iran/Syria will have to either show their hand openly or become much more discreet what they do with it....a hope, anyway.

The Czechs do look good, very good. And no doubt Joe is sipping sweet Spumante in anticipation of Azzurri glory. But I do think this Yankee team is the best we have ever had, and am cautiously optimistic they will make it out of the group round [probably,if so, to then be promptly exterminated by Brazil in the round of 16. Life is Unfair]. Do you have a favorite?
