McCain is supposed to free Steyn? Jeez, AI, if he fails to walk on water he'll not be divine enough for you.

Write in Romney!

Isn't this hubris of the NRO Buckley hole-washers grand, though? You'd think Steyn were in some Chinese dungeon eating rat meat!

Here's some similar hubris.

Uh, JJ, you can do much much better than that. You don't have to be consigned to a Chinese dungeon eating rat meat in order to say "OK, now freedom of speech is in serious trouble". For instance, one can be banned from publishing, or if published again can be charged with a "hate crime" carrying a jail sentence, or one can be denied entry into the country......heck, one can even be denied tenure. If the latter was to happen, who knows what sort of shithole of learning, perhaps even in Massachusetts, one would be consigned to just long enough to damn even your friends?
Oh, also, once you've decided that free speech is to be officially eliminated and that speech is a mere "privilege" to be granted, and vetted for , by Versailles, then the game is over. Burn the long history in the West of the expansion of human freedom, from the Magna Carta to the Bill of Rights, for keeping you a few minutes warm on a cold winter's day is all the good it will now do you.

All NRO, and I, and AI, but I suppose not you or Pepe [MFT will speak for himself] would have liked was for McCain to come out clearly on the side of human freedom. It wouldn't be about "freeing Steyn", it would not even have to mention anyone involved in the case. All it would have to do is be a simple and forceful statement as to the common historical allegiance of Canada to the threatened Western ideal of the rights of men, and a call upon Canada to join us in the struggle to seek, and preserve, that ideal.
It would be a polite, perhaps even effective, way of saying "crap, man, are you guys going all fascist on us? Buck up, dudes, and be part of the solution and not of the problem!"
If McCain doesn't have the will to do such, or, even worse, not recognize that anything is going on that requires such, then this country is fucked to bloody tears. For Obama, to the ullulation of Le Pew, will use the Bill of Rights to wipe his ass after supping at Versailles.

"What exactly are those Canazians going to do to Steyn, now? "

Uh,JJ, let's see what they will do to Steyn. The first step of these "human rights commissions" after Steyn is officially convicted in BC will be to extend these trials to the different provinces. They will be able to move more rapidly as "precedent" has beent set. At each such step, it now becomes illegal to sell that book, encourage its reading, and so on, in those provinces. Different Islamic groups, or other "aggrieved" can now file suits against Steyn claiming damages. If he persists in trying to sell such "hate crimes"
writings in Canada he can be sentenced to jail, as has happened to a few already. Of course he won't be in Canada for that, and so they would never have to go that far unless he double dared them so to speak, but what will happen is that a "standard" will have been set in Canada as to what you cannot say if you want to avoid this costly mess. McLean, for example, will almost surely never again publish an article examining the rising influence of radical islamic groups in the country, nor their efforts to impose sharia piecemeal on the nation. A country without a bill of rights moves even further away from such notions, and further into acquiescence into creeping Islamization [the British model, if you will].
The intent of these prosecutions is to cow most people into shutting the fuck up and accept meekly what the lords of multicult have commanded. If a Canadian insists on speaking as a free man, then that reactionary bugger can go to the Yanks.
Ask yourself, JJ, why does Steyn think this is such an important battle? Do you really believe that he is so indebted to his canuckian customers that he fears for his looniefund? How about you read what those subject to this prosecution think will come next. They might actually know the reality of what they are facing.
As for some Canadian putting us on the "Bad Boyz" list, I say so what? Canada, and we, would be much better off if Canadians were completely free to speak both like that gerbil and like Steyn.
JJ, consider the powerful trend in politics in this country to let the opinions of foreigners be the judges of our future. The fewer allies we have who uphold free speech, and notions roughly akin to the Bill of Rights, the greater will be the pressure on these within our own country. The Left is tempted, and sees a great opportunity, to impose censorship, JJ, and where it already can it is doing so. Are you so sure we are immune to this?

I think you're wrong. McLean's will publish the hell out of this stuff. They've never sold more of their stupid Barbara Amiel junk before ever.
Which Canadians are in jail for writing stuff, now? I have my doubts, but will follow any link you put here.

I think we are pretty immune to this, yes. Our immigrants are different than Canada's and our law has a different lineage.
Recall that in the UK you can be sued for libel even if you're telling the truth!
