JJ, this is an extremely interesting idea. I finally was able to pick up Doris Kearns Goodwin this last week, too. As a Dakotan and Plainsman, it's natural for me to note that Goodwin should've done a bit better job mentioning how Lincoln dealt with the Great Sioux Uprising, or Dakota Conflict out West, all while trying to keep this Union together. Off hand, I recall Lincoln pulling General Pope off the Battle of Bull Run line, and sending him to Mankato to deal with the already abused Sioux.
