Conventional wisdom says: Mitt Romney will be hard to hate in the general for the same reason he is hard to love in a primary. There isn't much 'there' there, so the spotlight will gravitate to Obama. Romney makes it a referendum on Obama; Gingrich makes it a choice.
As always, you totally miss the point, Mr Rot. I know that never registered on your consciousness, but Mac was briefly ahead in the polls at the beginning of September, 2008. So it wasn't a case of people not forgiving him whatever transgressions he may have had. But rather, it was a case of his (a) totally inept campaigning for the next, crucial 2 months, and (b) his revealing for all to see what I had said 8-10 months beforehand, to wit, his abysmal understanding of economics (kind of on a par with Cain's understanding of foreign policy, if you want a comparison).
Jeez, Mr Rot, you'll never get this basic point, will you? How do you expect to assess the current race, if you still can't figure out the basics of the previous one?

Gingrich, who would have made a marvelous Marxist, believes everything is related to everything else and only he understands how.
Is Will stealing my "A implies B for all A and B" rule? I think he owes me a pint.
Will wouldn't drink beer, would he?
Hmmm... Shot of single malt, then?
Reminds me of Mr Rot pulling hard for Mr Maverick himself.

"...hard to hate in the general..."
Dunno. RINOs get some gut feelings started this time through.
Last time, some people couldn't even forgive a war hero for not toeing the line good enough.

Hmmm, about the current race, how do you feel about Romney?
I'm trying to assess the race, not feel about it.
Spit your opinion out.
