the wsj article's stance is that opposition to the soviets absolves from all other sins. it is their prerogative to present helms under this light, but it takes nothing away from the fact that he was a contemptible racist homophobe.

Nah, he played hardball politics is all. Anyway, the fight against the Soviets was more important than this social crap.
