I've actually met allegre on several occasions at earth science meetings when i was a grad student. the most striking thing about his professional personality is his propensity at always trying to come up with something controversial. he truly epitomizes the scientist starved for publicity, and as much if not more of a marketing person than a scientist.

This sentence sounds characteristic of a certain Al Gore...

In any case, I know the type (see Jared Diamond). I've talked about this with a history prof, and we've come to the conclusion that research and writing are secondary. It's all about having a good P.R. guy nowadays (or maybe nothing has really changed at all?).

See what geologists who aren't starved for publicity are saying.

Seriously, Pepe: check out Bluemle, and give me your take (if and when time allows).
