So what's Perry's position on what he calls the "Pakistani country"? I could not make heads or tails of what he was saying about that during the debate, and nor can I now, after re-reading the transcript a couple of times. Maybe Der Rotter can translate from Texan?
Perry is as "good" on "Our Friends and Allies" in the Ummah as Bush Sr. and Baker, for example, where at gladding it up with the House of Saud. And as honest. Much bigger than just an Achilles heel.
I have to confess, I basically had no idea of who Rick Perry was before he started opening his mouth at the debates. But, the more I listen to him, the more he sounds like W, circa 2000. Only W was a better orator, and better communicator, warts and all. And, it was one thing to talk about "compassionate conservatism" when we had a budget with a surplus coming in in the late 1990s, and it's another thing now, when we are $14.5T in a hole, and diggin' in at a rate of $1.5T a year.
I haven't the foggiest where Perry stands on the WoT -- but his answers on Afg & Pak were not reassuring: completely muddled and incoherent. But, given his reluctance to defend the southern border against armed incursions and potential infiltration by terrorists, he doesn't inspire too much confidence on that angle, either. We'll see.
