Some fun sentences here and there, as usual. Still, who does she really want? She can't have us think McCain's contribution to the WOT was irrelevant. Even Barnes in correctly praising Bush's courage and steadfastness credits McCain. Problem is that if a lot of people lsten to her and the other Jesus and no Mexicans Republicans, they won't win, as Rove implies. That in turn implies that we get Hill or Obama and that second one implies that we lose the WOT.

OK, maybe so. But why should everyone roll over for McCain? I don't see him as having closed the deal. And I don't want him to get cocky -- he needs to fight for the damn nomination (this is not a coronation), and try to score points on merit, not kneecap those who disagree with him. Also, he needs to stop smirking and snarling, like Hillary. And stop acting like Kerry (who by the way served in Vietnam). Then maybe -- maybe -- he can earn more support.

A rough primary fight doesn't do the party much good and our party is weak enough now. OK, Romney can keep fighting (it's a joke, by the way; he's getting very little outside money and footing the bill himself) bt for what? You really want him to get the nomination? Obama will shred him, I think. Look.
As far as McCain's disdain for Romney, I don't see it too badly. What is Romney after all, compared to McCain? HAs he got convictions or ideas? Has he served this country or been anything ther than an opportunist? Can Romey fly fighter jet and survive years in the Hanoi Hilton? Why again is McCain supposed to show respect t a guy like Romney then?

Fair enough question. And the answer is two part:

(1) For better or worse, Romney now represents a big chunk of the Republican Party (including economic conservatives). For McCain to smirk at him, and act like he's a moron, is not just unbecoming, but it can't possibly unite people behind him, especially after all those years he spent showing the finger, and playing footsie with Ted & Co.

(2) To the average Joe in the street, it simply does not look good. Again, too much like Billary smirking at Obama.

I don't know about that. A lightwight and pretender deserves to be treated as such. It's part of honesty and straight talk and a military background. People expect cockiness from a fighter pilot and it's the right mental state for one. There's such a thing as saluting the uniform, or the office but Romney doesn't have any office or uniform oter than the 250 million bucks he made in the market. So what? If McCain treats him like dirt and that offends Romney's or McCain's supporters then it's a bad idea. If it strengthens others' impression that Romney is a kid trying to play ball with grownups, then it's a fine idea.
Remember Bentsen poleaxeing Quayle with "You're no Jack Kennedy."

Hmmm... Yes, but Bentsen said it with a smile (not a smirk), and Quayle was just an idiot (from another party, to boot). Besides, Bentsen lost, and Quayle won (well, on the coattails of Papa Bush, who was simply coasting on Reagan's legacy).

At any rate, go back and (re)read Mona Charen's and Mark Steyn's take on McCain as a "Sore Winner", and perhaps you'll dig what I'm bitching about.

OK, I'll read Mona if you insist, but I don't like how women think about politics generally. Kim Srrassel is an exception, I guess. Noonan is awful...

OK, let me try another angle. How about all Mitt attacks coming from the Huckster? They say the two are fighting over the same pie, but it seems to be Huck is playing interference for Mac, and really angling to become his VP choice (instead of Rudy). Be that as it may, I got the feeling that pretty much everyone (including Fred Thomson) has ganged up at one point or the other against Mitt. So OK, life is a bitch, he's a big boy, and all that -- still, this is a rather unusual spectacle.
