This Brit is more interesting, though as long-winded as Joe Biden: How can these disparate individuals who may themselves be immigrants, or else anything from first to fifth-generation descendants of migrants from virtually every part of the globe, feel that there is any unifying core of nationality that makes them one people? What is it that binds them together in spite of all their manifest differences in personal and ethnic history? The official answer is the Constitution and the political settlement that it represents. But in truth, it is the American experience: the fact of having chosen this nation and this way of life (or being descended from someone who made that choice) as an act of individual will, with all the consequences for personal responsibility and action that that entails.

What about Pepe? Where does he fit?

Ted, you dismiss the 'reaching across the aisle' thing that Mac is famous for and would be embodied by Lieberman. Also, Lieberman's success in spite of his fellow democrats' new extremism might get that party back in the realms of the sane.

I still like Lieberman, but for the election, a woman, any woman would be great for Mac. Condi especially. There are a lot of Hillary-types around feeling mistreated by Obama and the dems and they aren't all knee-jerk liberals. Also, Condi's race could split the ethnic vote a tiny bit.

Any Hispanic republican women out there that aren't creationists?

AI, that Brit is prolix AND obvious--is he channelling Biden?. Usually I can only tolerate only one of those qualities at once.

I don't see Condi on the ticket -- she never ran for anything, not even dog-catcher. Palin is a bit more believable in the VP role, being a governor. Still, one-on-one, Mitt is more qualified than either. This is not just political bean-counting, and appealing to various electoral groups -- or, at least, it should not be. Whatever happened to the old-fashioned concept that the best-qualified person gets the nod?
