Mathematics Genealogy Project: Henri Paul Cartan
While academics understandably need to compartmentalize to get anything done, it's also interesting to keep that Bigger Picture in mind. Check out the link to the Henri Paul Cartan genealogy project. Note: this link is a collaborative effort, in part with North Dakota State University (based in Fargo -- insert "You-Betcha" here).

I had no idea...
Yes, I know the site very well, and I corresponded with the guy who runs it (Harry Coonce) a number of times. I fed him a bunch of names and all the info I could muster -- it's kind of fun, and he's good at it.
You the one that put me in there? My advisor told me to but I always put it off.
Probably -- I forget now, but I sent him a whole bunch of local names. But I also dug out stuff on 19th century--early 20th century PhDs, eg, some students of Picard that were not listed there previously.
Picard was a badass

Someone had to be the muscle to keep that Bourbaki Circle in line. Montel's the perfect man for getting straight all that curved shit.
