A dastardly neocon election ploy
Planet Pepe has a Grand Unified Theory of why Russia invaded Georgia. Yes, you guessed it: it's all the neocons' fault: Scheunemann is at the center of the neoconservative cabal that has come to dominate the Republican candidate's foreign policy stance in a replay of the run-up to the war against Iraq. These folks are always looking for a foreign enemy on which to base a new Cold War, and with the collapse of Saddam Hussein's regime, it was Putin's Russia that came increasingly to fit the bill. ... What is at work here is a neoconservative, self-fulfilling prophecy in which Russia is turned into an enemy that ramps up its largely reduced military, and Putin is cast as the new Joseph Stalin bogeyman, evoking images of the old Soviet Union.

The neocons joined their "contract with america" counterparts in the trash can of history, ai. Their responsibility is limited to the mistakes in the middle east and fortunately, we will never hear of them again outside of small circles of Hummer H2 nostalgics or when the left needs an easy boogey man to beat up conservatives with.

You're right -- this piece is a caricature of itself. Usually, the MSM tries (just a tad) to be more careful about these things. But this guy lets it all hang out. And he's not isolated. The attack on McCain came fast and furious from the Obama campaign for his advisor's ties with Georgia. The Russian bear is feasting on the carcass of a nation, and all Obama can do is blame the neocons.
