I am not referring to the scandals that were dug up by the campaign staff of Michael Dukakis in 1987, though for a politician to be defeated by the Dukakis machine must have been quite a humiliation. Romney might still be the right choice, but not for that reason.

Tecumseh said...: Lloyd Bentsen cleaned the clock of Dan "Potatoe" Quayle, but Papa Bush still won against the Duke. So yes, it's possible to make a terrible vp choice, and still win. But consider: Bush Pere was running after 8 years of Reagan, which is not the same as 8 years of Bush Fils. And Obama has a better organization than Dukakis (no tank rides, that's for sure), while McCain doesn't have Roger Ailes and Lee Atwater to run a real tough campaign. So, bottom line is, McCain desperately needs a good VP choice -- he screws this up, and he's done.; 8/25/2008 7:22 AM
