aa - if one were to transpose your logic to 2,000 years passed, your indignation would be directed against the lions rather than the romans who placed the christians in the arenas.

Back to today, it is the manner of this idiotic invasion, thanks to a large part to Bremetr's ineptitude, that has allowed shiites and sunnis to rekindle their ancestral hatred. That you don't see why the US should take any responsibility for its inability to foresee this course of events is mind-boggling.

Bremer was an idiot, but the shias and sunnis have no one to blame but themselves. The wot started as a civil war within islam to protect from garbage like TV shows ike "Friends" and 'entertainment' like Tenacious D's elsewhere on the blog today. They brought the war to NYC on Sep 11 and we've, in effect, handed it back to them to fight it out amongst themselves.
The hope was that the moderates (I hope the hope wasn't that the swine that would want Tenacious D) would win out and the extremists (that don't even like Seinfeld) would get sidelined in madrassahs as empty as French Catholic churches.
Maybe it will still work. We need to see if Petraeus will be our Jan Sobieski or if Nancy Pelosi will be our Wu Sangui.
The Romans were certainly not to blame for the lions and christians melee. The christians were subverting Roman society. That society had a right to protect itself and have a blast inso doing. Weak, decadent, morally ambiguous, and demoralized, the Romans punished the Christians excessively and eventually lost their own will to do that.
