Couldn't Find a Qualified Scientist?

"It sends the right signal, because Harvard didn't intentionally pick a woman, but it turns out that the best president for Harvard was a woman," said Amy Gutmann, who is the second consecutive woman to lead the University of Pennsylvania. "When we were in college, not one of us imagined that this would happen."

What a pact!

Radcliffe speaker Rebecca Walker, for example, has created the “I Spy Sexism” initiative, which asks young women between the ages of 15 and 30 to keep logs of the “sexism, racism, and homophobia” that they see as they walk down the street or go to a movie.

Pepe must be panting to get his hands on this piece of exquisite pinko lit. Can we have a sample?

Remember this, AI?

For instance, most of us have probably been conditioned to believe that women and girls just aren’t as good at math or science.

Yes, that's the big problem with Amerikkka. We need Big Sister iSpying to remedy that crying shame. JJ, you must help!

And, good memory, JJ -- now I remember that discussion. Rather prescient, huh? Who wins the VCP there?

I think that VCP is to me. I thought for sure Harv would choose a woman scientist (that the faculty could bend to their Cornel Westian ideal, hopefully) so as to be as spiteful as possible to Summers. In fact they confirmed his point of view completely. Very strange. Or stupid.

A Faustian bargain?

I know it as a "Faustian pact" -- whence the first post (why "bargain", JJ? It's a "pact with the devil", ya know -- tsk, tsk, tsk.)

At any rate, beyond semantics -- Faust at least got something in the bargain (sigh...),
whereas what is Harvard getting out of this?

Sorry I'm a dope. The Pact thing flew past me till I arrived at it myself.
What Harv gets out of this? They are back in the fold of the bien pensants after that awful brush with the Fascist Clintonite Summers.
The faculty are no longer up in arms and they can concentrate on U S parochialism and its cures.

Probably a woman scientist realized that she would have very little to gain from playing Harvard Strikes Back Again and Again. Whereas a dark cowled soul who has struck a Faustian bargain sees only Win-Win in being named High Chancellor
