As voters begin to focus on Obama’s opponent, which candidate’s style might be most appealing? Both are good-looking politicians — Romney skewing more Ralph Lauren, Perry the traditional Marlboro Man. [..] There was a moment, however, in last week’s debate that, to me, indicated that Romney could have the edge with women in the long run. During the candidate question-and-answer session, while most of the others unsuccessfully tried to ding Romney, the former governor of Massachusetts took his question to Michele Bachmann. At a table full of men, Romney, very politely, very charmingly, asked for a woman’s input. And, even more important, he listened intently, without a hint of condescension, while she answered his question. In other words, he treated an attractive and articulate woman like an equal.

Who's Rick Perry? He kinda looked lost, like Harry Dean Stanton wandering in the desert, around Paris, Texas. Sorry, Mr Rot, your man just doesn't cut the mustard. Nothing personal, it's just business.

Maybe that's because Perry has the same kind of trouble with logical implications: he professed he was “offended” at the suggestion he would sell out for a $5,000 donation—apparently not understanding the implication that there was a price at which he might well sell out.

More importantly, though, he seems to think he can wing these debates by referring to what he did in Texas here and what he did in Texas there. That is insufficient not just when it comes to giving voters a chance to judge him by the policy choices he might make; it’s insufficient because it suggests he thinks he can get away without getting specific and demonstrating a command of national and international issues.
