The joyless abuse of the hollow remnants of Western civilization

The world [Pepe] wants to live in is a little like the dinosaur room in a museum: full of the bare bones of old ideas, stripped of their flesh and devoid of life.

Young Kakutani doesn't like Niall Ferguson

Though clearly he has some inkling of dynamical systems: Civilizations are highly complex systems, made up of a very large number of interacting components that are asymmetrically organized, so that their construction more closely resembles a Namibian termite mound than an Egyptian pyramid. Such systems can appear to operate quite stably for some time, apparently in equilibrium, in reality constantly adapting. But there comes a moment when they ‘go critical.’ A slight perturbation can set off a ‘phase transition’ from a benign equilibrium to a crisis — a single grain of sand causes an apparently stable sandcastle to fall in on itself.

Oh, shit!

I refuse to accept that Western civilization is like some hopeless old version of Microsoft DOS, doomed to freeze, then crash. I still cling to the hope that the United States is the Mac to Europe’s PC, and that if one part of the West can successfully update and reboot itself, it’s America. Hmmm...

VDH gets into the Fourth of July spirit

Open borders, non-assimilation, ethnic separatism, and tribalism lead to the Balkans or Rwanda — not, as envisioned, to a society patterned after the boutique diversity of the faculty lounge.

Mr Rot, of course, takes the Harvard faculty lounge view.

The ruin of the Nanny State

Evans-Pritchard lays it out: Britain, Spain, France, Germany, Italy, the US, and Japan are in varying states of fiscal ruin, and those tipping into demographic decline (unlike young Ireland) have an underlying cancer that is even more deadly. The West cannot support its gold-plated state structures from an aging workforce and depleted tax base. You don't say.

Er það hægt, dáinn draumur Íslendingur??

From the Saga of Burnt Njal (somewhat amended) :

""So it is," said JJ, "as run words-- `Ill goes it with
those who are born on barren land, and more Ill those who have drunk by the green river yet awake to barren land.-'"

"Wilt thou to Iceland?" she asks.

"Yes," he answered.

Unfortunately, JJ, it came to pass that:

"Men say that the end of JJ's life was, that he fared abroad,
when he had grown old, to seek for sound timber to build him a Hall worthy of his Love; and he was in the Nordlands that winter, but the next summer he was late, bound in southern straights; and men told him that his ship was not seaworthy.

His Love said she was quite good enough for an Old and Deathdoomed
man, and bore his goods on shipboard and put out to sea to Iceland. But of
that ship no tidings were ever heard, not even from the cry of gulls, and time passed until men forgot to seek to hear"
