My Frontier Thesis said...: Interesting paper about humanities pastoral duty within the natural world. Cattle should be able to lead comfortable lives whether they are amongst Hindus or not. And I'd argue (as do Departments of Game and Fish) that controlling game populations is far more humane than letting the animals "take care of themselves." What happens in this latter case is over-population, which over-taxes the natural food systems, and this in turn leads to starvation, disease, and horrible deaths absolutely chalk full of prolonged pain, fear, and suffering.
