But I don’t think anyone was hugely shocked to know that some vestiges of old attempts to use intelligence are still there.
Using intelligence is a Russian thing these days.

Good title, but sorry, VCP.
You were bringing out the wrong aspect of the story, Tecs. You look at things always in this louche way of yours and then claim credit for everything.
I think you need to get back to married life and off the limoncello a bit. Perhaps a bit of chastening and staring up at the stars and floating will do you some good.
I know I have just yesterday returned to married life and the stars were beautiful last night on the roof, away from the madding crowd.
You have a roof to go to, Herr Ro? I thought you live in one of standard-issue, DDR-style cement block apartment buildings, where the only outlet to fresh air is a dingy window.
They removed the cages around the roof access when Honecker passed on.
Ach, so? So OK, what can you see from your roof? I went up on the roof of the building I was staying on when down in that old city by the n hills. Nice view, indeed, with the Quirinale just a stone's throw away. Can you see it?
Hey, aren't you supposed to be on a Coanda-mobile back to married life?
Can see everything. We're on a hill above Montesacro.
Still in my dank hovel, which got nicer once the stupid rain stopped. Will get to the Coanda-mobile pretty soon.
Back to the subject: Russian girl reminds me a bit of that Eliot Spitzer girl. No?
Hmm, I don't think either of them is that pretty, but Spitz' I think is better-looking. No?
What was that Aesop fable, again?
