on iran

Before we get to the apparent war-mongering, let’s talk about the basics. Are there people in Iran providing aid to factions in Iraq, factions that sometimes kill Americans as well as other Iraqis? Yes, probably. But you can say the same about Saudi Arabia, which is believed to be a major source of financial support for Sunni insurgents — and Sunnis, not Iranian-backed Shiites, are still responsible for most American combat deaths.

The Bush administration, however, with its close personal and financial ties to the Saudis, has always downplayed Saudi connections to America’s enemies. Iran, on the other hand, which had no connection to 9/11, and was actually quite helpful to the United States in the months after the terrorist attack, somehow found itself linked with its bitter enemy Saddam Hussein as part of the “axis of evil.”

So the administration has always had it in for the Iranian regime. Now, let’s do an O. J. Simpson: if you were determined to start a war with Iran, how would you do it?

First, you’d set up a special intelligence unit to cook up rationales for war. A good model would be the Pentagon’s now-infamous Office of Special Plans, led by Abram Shulsky, that helped sell the Iraq war with false claims about links to Al Qaeda.

Who is krug? An Enron adviser, perhaps?

...a mere mft commentary on the passing scene: In the broader geo-, military- and political-historiography, it will be argued for decades, perhaps centuries, to come: one sub-group will say the Bush Administration lied all along. The other will say Saddam's exiled advisers told the Bush Administration what they knew, and the said Bush Administration acted on that intelligence. And Pepe will predictably and incessently provide us with the Hugo Counter Point, and Chirac will make statements about razing Tehran after the Iranians nuke Israel.

I think Chirac did well to say that. Khameini and ilk likely think him an honest broker (i.e. neutral in the struggle against islamic barbarism). For Chirac of all people to point out that Ahmadinejad is nuts likely has brought about Iran's climbdown yesterday.

aren't y'all bothered by all the noise around iran and the contrasting silence when it comes to saudi arabia?

mft - is your point simply that preponderance of evidence isn't a proof?

shit i am anonymous again but this is pepe

My point is merely projecting what one of the historiographic debates of the future will be. Both sides will forever say they both had a preponderance of evidence to support their claims. Just social commentary, Pepe. It's not worth the energy to get too wound up about it.

But only one side has had its predictions verified (note the date).

exerpt: "But I also know that Saddam poses no imminent and direct threat to the United States, or to his neighbors...and that in concert with the international community he can be contained until, in the way of all petty dictators, he falls away into the dustbin of history"

No, Pepe, you just happen to be on one of the sides. The incantations are all-too familiar.

According to Al Gore, it doesn't matter because we're all going to fall away into the garbage barge of ecology. They've got it covered from several angles.

Well, at least Global Warming would let our stinking corpses rot faster and so befriend those critters who need our nutrients. Unless we actually get Deep Freeze. In which case our corpses will have a nice icy sheen for a long long time. Either way, Win-Win Mr.Gore
