Wowsers! I was keeping an eye on this AA--Rot match, slightly leaning towards Rot (on points), for a change. But this is a knock-out punch, like in that pic I talked about a while ago. Sorry AA, life is a bitch, you're a big boy, you'll get up to fight another day, but Herr Rot was right this time (happens once in a blue moon).
Huck says: He was recommended for and received a commutation of his original sentence from 1990, this commutation made him parole eligible and he was then paroled by the parole board once they determined he met the conditions at that time. He was arrested later for parole violation and taken back to prison to serve his full term, but prosecutors dropped the charges that would have held him.
Does he personally take responsibility for letting this guy out? I don't see that.
Hey, you take my accolade, and kick me in the shins for my trouble? Day at the office on Planet Rot.
As for Huck, I wouldn't associate his behavior (setting free criminals) with the teachings of Christianity. Have you heard of "Render unto Caesar the things which are Caesar’s, and unto God the things that are God’s"? When it comes to matters of public responsibility -- and, after all, a Governor has a lot of such power invested in him -- the first responsibility is to the law. If there was a conflict in his mind between his religious beliefs (which btw is not the same thing as Church doctrine -- just interpretation thereof) and his public duties (such as keeping dangerous criminals behind bars), he shoulda simply resigned. Duhhh.
Must be a penumbra there, Tecs. Jesus was talking about taxes in that speech.
Thing is that there is such a thing as being too Christian for political office. Huck (like Carter) is one of these guys that asks WWJD instead of WWC(aesar)D.
As to your shins, sorry. Piss up a rope and all that. Cheers!
Jesus was talking about taxes, yes, but his saying can (and has been) construed in a much wider way: This phrase has become a widely quoted summary of the relationship between Christianity and secular authority. The original message, coming in response to a question of whether it was lawful for Jews to pay taxes to Caesar, gives rise to multiple possible interpretations about whether it is desirable for the Christian to submit to earthly authority. Interpretations include the belief that it is good and appropriate to submit to the state when asked, that spiritual demands supersede earthly demands but do not abolish them, or that the demands of the state are non-negotiable.
That said, we all know Huck is an idiot. I mean, duhh. So what's the argument?
More interesting, from a purely political point of view, is the question: who'll come out on top now for the 2012 GOP nomination race? Mitt or Sarah? That's a better question to fight about, than to dissect Huck's idiocies. Let's be efficient, willya?
Tecs, I'm worried about that. I think Sarah is stuck below or at VP for a while. I like the idea of her being about at Rahm Emanuel's position or in some cabinet energy position.
Romney doesn't interest anyone. We need a dark horse like Clinton, but the GOP doesn't work that way, as we know. There's always this ladder that has to be climbed and no one is up above rung #2 right now except for Sarah and Mitt.
Unless Cheney's daughter or Petraeus or someone like that can get into it in 3 years, we're in for a lot of hurt.
I never thought Huck was an idiot, but I do think he's a regional and stuck that way, unlike Clinton. Huck looks like a cast member of the Andy Griffeths show and that'll kill you in a real election.
Pres. Gomer Pyle.
I'll be happy with both houses in 2012. Let Obama be the worst two-termer in history, but with a Senate full of Giulianis and Inhofes, that might not be an unmitigated disaster.
We still have time on our hands until 2012. First things first -- I hope that the balance shifts measurably in the House and Senate in 2010. I can't hope for a repeat of 1994, but even if half the scale of that realignment were to happen, it would bring some kind of better balance than now.
As for Huck, OK, he's not a complete idiot -- he's actually a pretty good speaker, smooth and all. I meant more, like, an idiot when it comes to actually running things. I simply cannot envision him as C&C. Talk show host is the right level for him.
Speaking of which, this is not the first time this happens: Huckabee advocated for parole for a convicted rapist who -- his allies said -- had been railroaded by Huckabee predecessor Bill Clinton. The rapist, Wayne DuMond, was released; he raped and murdered another woman. Mitt Romney made the DuMond story a centerpiece of his campaign against Huckabee in Iowa in 2007.
But then Iowans, wise as they are, proceeded to hand Huck the victory that derailed Mitt's campaign right from the start. You see, Mitt is a Mormon, can't have that, better vote for a guy who sets killers and rapists free, just for the fun of it. Right, Mr Rot?
I'm surprised that Iowans would fault Romney for Mormonism, actually, and not surprised that Iowans would support clemency for the most depraved bastards in existence.

The Huck as a wannabe The Duke? Who woulda thunk?

Huckabee's a Christian and forgives like one. He's also like a Christian in that stacking up our dead is an acceptable price to pay for being nice.

Still dreaming of Petraeus-Palin ticket...

Well, then, maybe we should skip the Iowa caucus, and restore NH to its traditional first-primary role...
Smart things like that are not smart. You saw the name Giuliani on the page.
Anyway, there is no rightful place for NH other than Canada.
