Ahem, Hollande is "hugely wealthy" with assets of "almost €1M" ? Perhaps you should inform the staff at the Evening Standard that the 20s are over.

Charly is miffed we would be so declasse' as to suggest that wealth measured in a mere milliard of euros would be worthy of membership in his Versailles.

Well, Declasse' R'Us

Charly: that's €1M (M=million) in liquid assets. Like, money in the bank. As the British rag makes it plain, that's not all that a self-respecting Brie-and-Chablis guy has. What's dans la pierre that really counts:

As well as the spacious Paris apartment he shares with his lover Valerie Trierweiler, Mr Hollande owns a palatial villa in Mougins, the hill-top Cannes suburb where artist Pablo Picasso used to live.

It is valued by the Official Journal at 800,000 euros (£642,000), and is just a short drive from Hollande’s two flats close to the promenade in Cannes. They are priced at 230,000 euros (£185,000) and 140,000 euros (£112,000). Mr Hollande has promised to cut his pay by 30 per cent after he is officially sworn in as president next week, but he will still be on 156,000 (£125,000) a year, plus fabulous expenses and other perks.

AA - millions, not milliards. That's the point.

Tecs - read sentences 2 and 3 which state that his assets (not his liquid or real assets - his assets) ... are valued at almost 1M pounds. They then go on to dissect said assets, throwing in proximity to one of Picasso's residences and his '3 current accounts' to hype up the premise of 'huge wealth', still he's got 1M pounds. To make a comparison that AA can relate to, 1M quids buy you about 200 pounds of beluga, not huge wealth, and certainly not by US standards.

Even assuming Tecs is right, that the article is poorly written and that Hollande's got 1M in cash and another in real estate, wouldn't change much to the fact that he may be comfortable, but certainly not 'hugely wealthy'.

I don't like Hollande much, but just because I don't like him doesn't mean any half-baked negative argument is worth making. This is agitation, not journalism.

OK, OK, maybe he's not "hugely" wealthy, but certainly in that mythical top 1% that la racaille keeps agitating against, and demonizing as the source of all evil. But of course, being a bien-pensant, cookie-cutter Socialist immunizes one against one's own propaganda. It's a Houdini-like act that the gauche caviar has perfected to a fine art over the past, oh, hundred years or so.

Man, oh, man! Are you back in the straddle, or what?

Tecumseh said...

Oops: straddle=saddle. Just put it on the tab.

I liked straddle better. Make it two on the tab, Tecs.

You straddling the saddle?

The beer here in Krautland is either pisswasser or weisswasser. The latter tastes funny, but at least has some taste, unlike that damn Kolnsch. So what goes on the tab?
