An 8th grade test from 1895

.. that is, from before the Pepean rot set in. C'mon, guys, let's see how good you are at this.

In true Pepean fashion, this guy pooh-poohs the 1895 exam as being dated (duhhh), but then gives a sample exam for certifying high school teachers in 1870. OK, Pepe, try this:
32 men agree to construct 28 miles 4 furlongs and 32 rods of road; after completing one-half of it, one-fourth of the number of men left the company, what distance did each man construct before and after one-fourth of the men left?

On a related note, I've been browsing through end of 19th century Yankee geometry texts for insights on how to teach a good course in solid geometry. It's clear that if I demanded of students today what was demanded then.... seria defenestrato num momento rapido.

Dumbing down kids so as to make them malleable to be shepherded into the pinko nirvana is a core Pepean principle.

An exam with a history component that doesn't deal almost exclusively with the meaning of the symbols on the flag ? Who are the commies that put this nonsense together ?
