I love trompettes de mort, but I have never found good ones here. Once in Orleans (not la nouvelle) I had a roast chicken stuffed with them and poitrine salee that was absolutely gorgeous.
Got some trompettes here once. Some black, some brown, some gray. All sandy as hell. Washed the fuck outta them and they tasted like zilch. I only trust France for those. Even in Italy they are very difficult to find. At some goddamned Carrefour in Orleans they had crates of the stuff one time. I was in heaven. Just sauteed with butter they were lovely.

yeah, maybe while you wait for the porcini season, but trumpets are more delicate.

I found good ones in Berkeley a couple of times but like porcini, they are very seasonal.
