Fort Rice, Dakota Territory, circa 1860s...

I took these pics of Fort Rice this evening (July 7th, 2007). General Sibley used Ft. Rice as a place to resupply during his Indian War campaigns on the upper Missouri. To contextualize it in the national sense, the Civil War was still raging in the east. The footings you see in the photos were re-constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps during the make-work projects of the Great Depression. These photos were snapped in the evening. The link above will take you to the first newspaper printed in Dakota Territory at Fort Rice, 1865. Plenty of Irish and German immigrants in that particular army, at least back then. Interesting stuff all around. Enjoy.

These are beautiful pics, MFT. Here's an idea: Why don't you upload them on wikipedia, so that they can be viewed by more people, and perhaps used in articles pertaining to them? If you have problems with the process, I can help.

Okay. I'll look into it.

AI, speaking of wikipedia, did you have anything to do with this entry?

You got any pics floating around of Saint Sava College? The wiki link could use some.

AI, here's one link and commentary that I just uploaded. I'm trying to figure out how to construct an actual Fort Rice wiki-link though. I'll keep poking around.

MFT: I had only marginal input on that IHR FA article. I used to live a stone's throw away from Saint Sava College, but no recent pics from me, maybe later this year.

As for the Ft. Rice pic -- a valliant attempt, but you gotat be careful with those copyright issues, or else they eat you alive! Well, not really, but they are really prissy about that, and will remove a pic unless properly identified. Let me look at it again, nad try to give you an idea.

MFT: Maybe the best is to start anew, though you may also try to patch up the original submission. At any rate, either way, after uploading the file (much like here at blogger), all you need to do is to put the magic words
{{pd-self}}
in the summary field. The rest (your releasing your copyright rights to the pic, etc), should be automatic, once you click the submit button. See if that works..

By the way, there is a mention of Fort Rice at the Sitting Bull article, but no article for Fort Rice. The world is waiting!

Yeah, I think the best thing to do is start anew. Thanks for that quick help, though.

I'll have to go through and see what other late nineteenth-century frontier forts on the Missouri River and otherwise are missing from wikipedia.

Surely, there must be big gaps in coverage on that subject. How many Dakotan or Montanan wikipedians can there be?

I was a bit surprised to see that something about Ft. Rice hadn't been assembled. I'll also have to check Fort Abraham Lincoln, Fort Stevenson, Fort Berthold, Fort Buford, Fort Totten, Fort Union and Fort Peck.

Now if I could only squeeze 32 hours in a 24 hour day...

There is a Fort Totten, North Dakota and a Fort Peck, Montana. Are these any good as starting points?
