I trust VDH only talks about humanities, which is the only subject he knows really well. There is still quite a bit of life left in the hard sciences and in engineering, where one has got to actually do something for a living, not just contemplate one's navel.
Yeah, it is the Humanities he has in mind. His point, I think, still stands. Universities are offering "techne", at best, as in sciences and engineering, and an artless illiberality at worst. The American University, as it was constituted in the last century, as falling into something meagre by comparison.
