Couldn't he at least have memorized the oath?

Watching the inaugural -- did you guys note how tongue-tied Obama was when taking the oath of office? (Well, Roberts also messed it up.) C'mon, Pepe, it's a short pledge, even you could do better. Oh, well.

A wonderful idea.

I've been looking for a Flash blocker for a long time. You guys have any experience with this? More. OK, I installed PithHelmet. It needs SIMBL installed first. PithHelmet works extremely well. I have it set to kill all the .swf in any webpage. This speeds browsing very much.

More news from Gitmo

AI challenged me a while back to find one innocent gitmo detainee. Then haggled that the ones I found weren't recent enough. Here's 24 of them. They're fresh. Can't wait to hear how this still doesn't count.

Lincoln Memorial Note on the Passing Scene

Politics aside, the Lincoln Memorial makes for a powerful backdrop no matter what the occasion. It's size is only realized when someone is actually standing beside it, or way in front of it. I had a chance to visit the swamp-turned-capital last in 1997.

Good North Dakota Legislator: It All Matters @ the Local

AI has understandably complained about how his North Dakota colleagues, or students, drink canned Miller Light — I refer to it as sparkling water. AI, our legislators heard you, and Representative Dan Ruby of Minot has responded: check out this short article regarding North Dakota House Bill 1249. It will allow North Dakotans to take our fine grains, barley hops, and potatoes, and start distilling whiskey, vodka, single malt and, I hope, a decent beer selection.

You'll notice the teetotalers got on this blog and immediately tried to turn this into a bill that would lead to evil, certainly an increase in underage drinking and drunk driving, both groups obviously interested in seeking out micro-brews and 12 year scotch. But you'll also notice MFT and a couple of his friends have answered. MFT posted under the pseudonym "Aaron," trying to keep the conversation on target.

Enjoy.

MacDo to the rescue

God's Mighty 'Tater Chip: The Universal Pringle

"Juan Maldacena at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, has confirmed that the idea is on the right track. He showed that the physics inside a hypothetical universe with five dimensions and shaped like a Pringle is the same as the physics taking place on the four-dimensional boundary."

Gee, Eliot was a prophetic genius, what with that "we are the holo men" riff. He really should get an Ignoble before The Big Crunch. Another Handful
Or, just maybe, the theoretical physicists have gone madder than the hatters of Planet Pepe's Mount Laudanum.

Globally freezing balls

Barack Obama has only four years to save the world. That's right. Unless he gets that SUV cranking, we're gonna freeze our sorry asses.

Seethe, Pepe, seethe

I only see Sotheby's on this list, no Nola outfit! So OK, no fair: top 10 in any business is basically impossible to achieve (though, for the life of me, I don't see why anyone would fork over $3,346,456 for this pic of some supermarket shelves -- maybe $3, tops?) But how about top 10,000? Is that feasible if you operate in the boonies, instead of London, Paris, or NYC?

How's Planet Pepe doing?

An unnecessarily complicated mathematical model

The mathematical model considers a male and a female in a courtship encounter of unspecified duration, with the game ending when one or other party quits or the female accepts the male as a mate. The model assumes that the male is either a ''good'' or a ''bad'' type from the female's point of view, according to his condition or willingness to care for the young after mating. The female gets a positive payoff from mating if the male is a ''good'' male but a negative payoff if he is ''bad'', so it is in her interest to gain information about the male's type with the aim of avoiding mating with a "bad" male. In contrast, a male gets a positive payoff from mating with any female, though his payoff is higher if he is "good" than if he is "bad". Oh, c'mon! Is this how it works? [Add a pic, per JJ's request.]

The 100 trillion dollar note

.. from Planet Pepe's little corner of paradise.

Taking driving lessons from JJ

Planet Pepe Doesn't Lie, People Die

Or, rather, the dogs of IM speak their simple truths, and the swine of EuroVichy do the lying for 'em; hoping we might not heed those simple truths until it is all too late.

Ulrich takes on Engineering, and Questions the Apollo Belvedere

From the moment Ulrich set foot in engineering school, he was feverishly partisan. Who still needed the Apollo Belvedere when he had the new forms of a turbodynamo or the rhythmic movements of a steam engine’s pistons before his eyes! Who could still be captivated by the thousand years of chatter about the meaning of good and evil when it turns out that they are not constants at all but functional values, so that the goodness of works depends on historical circumstances, while human goodness depends on the psychotechnical skills with which people’s qualities are exploited? Looked at from a technical point of view, the world is simply ridiculous: impractical in all that concerns human relations, and extremely uneconomic and imprecise in its methods; anyone accustomed to solving his problems with a slide rule cannot take seriously a good half of the assertions people make. The slide rule is two systems of numbers and lines combined with incredible ingenuity; the slide rule is two white-enameled sticks of flat trapezoidal cross section that glide past each other, with whose help the most complex problems can be solved in an instant without needlessly losing a thought; the slide rule is a small symbol carried in one’s breast pocket and sensed as a hard white line over one’s heart. If you own a slide rule and someone comes along with big statements or great emotions, you say: “Just a moment, please – let’s first work out the margin for error and the most-probable values.” …This was without doubt a powerful view of what it meant to be an engineer.
