My Frontier Thesis said...: Well, I've visited Juarez, and studied and presented on Teotihuacán (pronounced "ti-oh-tu-i-kan," at least according to my UCLA trained anthropology instructor) for a graduate method and theory archaeology course about three years ago. I enjoyed Juarez, but only in the evenings. Great varieties of salsa, although my time there was limited. If I ever return to Mexico, I want to go to the capital city (I say f*ck the trendy Coors Light coastal resorts).

I know what passes for "Mexican" food in Yankeeland often isn't. And good refried beans are made with real lard. About 100 miles east of Bismarck, and 100 miles south (Dakota Territory is vast -- AA had to drive it once, and then Montana), a Mexican family runs a rather good eatery entitled, "Mazatlan" centered in the old rail-station in the small hamlet of Aberdeen, S.D. Dos Equis is also on tap, and cheap (something like $1.50/pint, at least last summer).

From what I understand, Mexicans have strong paterfamilial ties, and this spills from and back into their Catholic heritage. I understand the argument about "keeping our borders safe," but the Conservative Family Values crowd often ignores the less-reported familial traditions of Mexico.; 7/31/2007 12:00 AM
