Let's make sure this doesn't happen, AI

Yup, Obama is very leftist, more leftist than we've seen on the campaign trail
[sorry, folks, but there ain't anything liberal about contemporary "liberals". They just be differing in their levels of anti-democratic socialism ]

AI wants to make sure we shit on McCain enough so Obama wins. Seems he's still sore about the Scientologist's losing.

Now, JJ, I doubt very much AI would choose Obama over McCain. Speaking for myself, I will vote for McCain. But I will do so cursing that McCain seems to be no longer half the man he once was, and wondering if I'm just being played for a chump.

JJ, you radote, as the Frenchy say. I'm sore for not having a true conservative to root for in the election, that's all. But even aside from ideological differences, I'm sore to see that McCain is such (1) a wimp, and (2) lacking the wherewithal to come up with stuff. I mean, Obama gives 3 big speeches in 3 days (one of which he wrote himself), and what does McCain do? Just bouncing around, sucking up to the Frenchies and stuff. Gimme a break.

No true conservative has ever won. That's why you're rooting, in effect, for Obama.

Reagan was a true conservative -- well, true enough for me. I'm not looking for ideological purity (there is no such thing in a politician, and I myself am not even sure what's the best course in every single issue), but some basic honesty, intelligence, vision, and understanding of conservative issues. McCain has some of that, but not nearly enough of what I would expect.

Also, AA touched upon a good point, so let me amplify it: One also looks at the (recent) trend, not just overall lifetime achievements. In other words, what's the derivative? Yes, McCain did all sorts of good things in the 60s, 70s, and 80s. But his record got checkered in the 90s (Keating 5), and he played footsie with the pinkos (Mr. Maverick) ever since.

On top of things, he's not getting any younger -- irrespective of politics, or L. Ron Hubbard, or whatever red herring JJ cares tho throw around, McCain is simply getting old. Can he really hack it? The jury is out on that one, I say.

but not nearly enough of what I would expect. Huh? You expect a lot.

How about this as minimal expectations (besides some basic knowledge of military and foreign policy affairs, which I will grant to McCain, though I don't think he's really the expert he thinks he is): (1) some rudimentary knowledge of how the economy works, and (2) some rudimentary understanding of what makes social conservatives tick, so as not to totally piss them off right off the bat. Is that too much to ask from a supposedly "conservative" standard-bearer?
