Pauvre France

Religious dogmas survive the test of time.

Would love to hear French politicians state that it is these people that make us a great country...

The kicker: he still leaves with 1,500 Euros.

Really? The religious schools [presumably most are catholic or muslim] in France teach today that the Sun revolves around the Earth? Really?
But, for arguments sake, let's say that's so. The audience voted 56% for "The Sun".. Assuming the audience is a reasonably random sample of French society, you're suggesting that 56% or so of the French learn their science in religious schools? That wasn't even true in the days of Descartes, never mind now. I would love to hear French politicians explain how the near monopolistic state education has so "educated" its citizens.

In any case, how about the simple answer? Most people, unless circumstances dictate otherwise, can't be bothered thinking beyond the appearances of this Vale of Tears. Things appear so, and to the far too common uncurious eye that's all to draw upon when asked on a game show. Since French education puts people into narrow grooves at an early age, most of the uncurious will never be in circumstances where they will be expected to think about scientific ideas in any serious way. They can stick to their politics and their pomo philosophy untroubled by any Reason, awake or slumbering. And, years later, they are 1500 Euros the richer for it.

Or maybe the guy just had a sinus infection and was in too much agony to think. He was making a bunch of weird faces, after all

Well, they haven't in five centuries but the old dogmas seem alive and well today.

Clearly, the Frenchman was channeling Ptolemy. Scientific advances take a long, long time to trickle down. Give it another 1,000 years, and perhaps things will go up. Or down. Inch Allah.

Looking at this another way -- isn't this French show a complete ripoff of a stoopid Ricain show? I remember a youtube clip with some dumb blonde (from NC or SC) having problems with the capitals of Europe. Can't the French come up with their own dumb reality shows?

I don't think it is possible to come up with anything stupider if that is what you are concerned about.

Hmmm... How come the French love Jerry Lewis?

again, an american creation.

Of course not. We don't teach that planet earth is 3 weeks old either - we aren't as lucky as kansas children.

So if the religious schools don't teach that, and we buy your assertion that the state schools are up to snuff on their basic sciences, then how did 56% of that audience get that notion in their noggin?
Yer saying that the French tourism industry's discovery of Kansas has had unimaginable effects?

"again, an american creation"

Pepe, honoring like stupid lemmings the avowed stupidities created by others is a much deeper order of stupidity.

I am saying that the old religious precepts take a long time to die. Kansas children may have half a millenium of obscurantism ahead of them.

Hmmmmm....
And what exactly,if it is due to religious dogma, as you seem to persevere in insisting, is sustaining it?
The magic of the ineffable?
