Terrible story, and I truly pity the man. There is no perfect system, and he's one of the (mercifully few) people that fell in between the cracks: self-employed, but with not enough brains to get insurance on his own (I mean, this is not rocket science). Shit happens, man -- life is a bitch (I know it, it happened to me once).

So, OK, what is the cure? I say, fine-tune the system, and try to further minimize the cases that fall in between the cracks. What do the pinkos say? Nationalize everything, let the Nanny State run the whole shebang -- of course.

ai - in his case, he would be under pre-existing condition statute & would not get it on his own. There is a member of my staff with similar issues (albeit less serious condition) who can't get coverage.

There is also a guy who works in a restaurant for a friend of mine. Got shot in the face 6 months ago & lost tongue and jaw. He was covered by his job but Humana tried to drop him on the grounds that, since he was in the hospital, he was no longer covered (mind you his bill is at $2M). The trick was to put him on leave of absence but there was quite a fight.
