Just to comment on the opening paragraph: it was my understanding that marriage, as an institution, really took off about the 11th century, around the same time that Mother Mary became just that: a diety herself.
Another interesting note: Catholocism is, when you get down to it, a polytheistic-style religion, where there are numerous saints that perform numerous miracles if prayed to.
