They are literally Pavlovian in this. They have been conditioned by persistent and regular political advancement; to merely invoke race has now long served them well, with metronomic dependability, and it will take a long series of failures to be handed their reward [of Power] before "race" ceases to drip from their tongues..... It may never happen.

As for the Bonfire -- ah, yes. But that was, oh, about 25 years ago, no? Would be surprised if a novel like that would get published nowadays. I mean, Yale Univ Press just spiked the cartoons from a book on the Muhhamed cartoons(!) The slippery slope is getting ever more slippery...
