Hey AI, I found yet another good shyster, this one at Harvard!
Make sure to read the entire article as Alan Dershowitz weighs in on FCP's recent "Kinetic Energy" thread. It's good. And Shyster, check it out for yourself.
I finally watched the latest Beowulf flick. Monotheism — Absolutism — is for pussies/idiots. Catholicism is at least polytheism veiled in monotheism (icons; angels; Saints; spirits; some kind of Trinity). Back to Beowulf, though.
Interesting quote in the movie, where some nut job asks his lord if they should pray to Odin and Thor, and even the new Christian god they've been hearing about. He responded with no, that they shouldn't pray to any god unless they themselves are willing to help themselves first.
JJ, are you suggesting your New Testament passage somehow applies to Islam Militant and a Celebration of Death?
Late last month, a young female bomber was shot as she approached some shops in central Baghdad. The Iraqi soldier who drew his gun hesitated as the bomber, hands raised, insisted that she wasn't armed. The soldier and a shop owner finally opened fire as she dashed for the stores; she was knocked to the ground but still managed to detonate the bomb, killing three and wounding eight. This is a win-win situation for Pepe: no matter how the cookie crumbles, he declares victory. Alles clar, ja?
It's just that the urge to sacrifice (one's self or one's son, even, I suppose) can have the noblest impetus there is and even be sanctioned by our religion. I like what AA said, but I doubt he would have said the same thing thinking of a tough British mum of 1943 bravely, worriedly, and proudly seeing her son off in his RAF uniform.
Same for the warriors themselves, morituri te salutant is a high moral calling. Self-sacrifice is the mark of the soldier
I think the muslims are our enemy but not for suicide bombings. Even the targetting civilians we've done in defense of freedom many times. The tactics in a war must be chosen according to expedience.
They have a powerful weapon in their will to die certainly and we have one in our ability to use superior tecnology to often safely dispatch them like rats. So?
Islam is our enemy and Israel our friend for more important reasons than battlefield tactics.

Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends (John 15:13).

Perhaps JJ is saying that love is proven by risking your life for those you love, whereas hate is proven by sending to their death those you love?

JJ, could you clear up my possible misunderstanding with a bit more context?
