I never, ever spent more than $50-$60 on a pair of sneakers -- right now I'm wearing year-old $30 Adidas sneakers, which are doing just fine, though I'm looking for a fresh pair for travel. I went to the mall the other day, could not find anything in my budget, so I simply did not buy anything.
