Portuguese Navy vs the pirates
Three cheers for Lt. Cmdr. Fernandes for catching those darn pirates in flagrante delicto. But then again, why set them free, without keelhauling them first? That damn Pepean "logic" got in the way.

But then again, why set them free, without keelhauling them first?Good point. It sounds as though Portuguese bullets cost more than Somali pirate boats, but in the long term it would be worthwhile. We got to think of the bigger picture here.
The 19 pirate suspects were released after consultation with Portuguese authorities because they had not attacked Portuguese property or citizens.
Decisions on detaining piracy suspects fall under national law; Fernandes said Portugal was working on updating its laws to allow for pirate suspects to be detained in such situations.
It's a shyster thing.
It's also a political thing. There is a strong current of "Preemptive Dhimmitude" running through the Portuguese government. The shyster thing is just a cover for a political decision.
The result is to turn Navy Men into Portuguese Waterdogs.
By the way, why does Reuters use the term "pirate suspect" instead of plain English pirate? I mean, not to be judgmental, but when a man boards ship with cutlass (or AK47) in hand, what's the ambiguity there? Duhhh.
