Total baloney. This guy is lying through his teeth. The GOP came en masse to his rescue in 2004 (with money, endorsements, campaigning -- the works), to save his sorry butt when he was challenged by a real conservative. Now he double-crosses all of them (bad enough), but then he has the cosmic chutzpah to say he does it 'cause the GOP has moved away from him. What a guy. You can have him, Pepe -- a perfect for with the Pepean cloaca.
