The unbearable lightness of the pinko mind

So light is the pinko mind that no Light can penetrate it. It comes down to a refusal to consider the distinction between the believing Islamist and the souls who are simply born to a place ruled by Islam, and the reality that it is the former who rule the fate of the latter.
It ain't a hard distinction. It's the distinction between the committed National Socialist and that decent chap at Goettingen who wonders why young Teichmuller and his buds have to be so "in your face" with harmless Miss Noether. The distinction between the committed NKVD/KGB operatives and such as poor Kolmogorov trying to carve out a small haven for decency and the freedom of the human mind in a world ruled by KGB operatives.
In each case we can, must have, much sympathy for the latter, trapped by bad luck in a world commanded by the former. But it would be insane to pretend that those so trapped represented the "real" National Socialism, or the "real" Communism, or the "real" Islam.
Those whose ideology leads them to command the practice of that ideology ARE, in fact, what the ideology is. They set the "theory", they illustrate the "praxis". That simple, and that awful.
Kristof is a genuine idiot, but in our bitter times he is merely one cackler goose lost in the massive gaggle.

If Kristof was writing for the NYT circa 1933, he'd be extolling the virtues of the Holodomor, like his predecessor Duranty. Plus ça change, ...
