The envy of the world

"Still, the studies contained a paradox that the authors of the BMJ article failed to notice or, at any rate, to remark upon. On several measures of actual achievement, rather than subjective assessment, the NHS came out the worst of all the systems examined. For example, it ranked worst for five-year survival rates in cervical, breast, and colon cancer. It was also worst for 30-day mortality rates after admission to a hospital for either hemorrhagic or ischemic stroke. On only one clinical measure was it best: the avoidance of amputation of the foot in diabetic gangrene.....

Overall, however, Britain seems to face a self-esteem problem: too much of it. How is it that the population most confident that it will receive treatment of the highest possible standard, featuring the latest medical advances, actually has the worst survival rates in precisely those diseases that require the most up-to-date treatments?

One explanation is ignorance.

Another explanation is ideology. "

Ignorance and Ideology, true enough, make their inestimable contribution to what passes for Pepean thought. But the author is too delicate, here. He should go right out and slap the third contributing factor onto the table:
As an evolutionary process the life of Planet Pepe selects for "fitness" organisms robustly insensitive to the tensions incident to the transgressions of empirical data and rational enquiry upon the comforts of the progressive Correct Concept.....
In short: Another explanation is Stupidity.

Interesting diagnostic -- and accurate.

Ignorance, ideology, and hubris methinks.

There is a dollop of hubris in there, yep. I mean, once you lose Empire, what are you left with? NHS?

We'll soon find out when Obama imposes justice on us.

What to look forward to: Gardner said when he accidentally swallowed the fork 10 years ago, a doctor told him the utensil would pass through his system naturally, leading him to forget about the event.

Day at the office in Pepea.
