From CNN today

The United States today used precision missiles to strike a "known terrorist target" in southern Somalia, a U.S. military official said. The strike destroyed two houses killing three women and three children, a local official told CNN.
Forward-thinking use of the term "precision". You reckon these children needed a good lesson? Who knows, maybe the women were running around on their husbands and the US granted a merciful death, far preferable to a good'ol stoning. [Found the link for you, Pepe. --JJ]

We can go on about the horror of it all but the deed has to be done. It takes a couple Dresdens to get rid of Hitler. So? That's war.

You think we can win some popularity contest by being nice to these guys that want to kill us? Plenty of countries play popularity games and end up just as hated.

Gotta go after our enemies somehow. Read the Dershowitz piece. It says nothing new but has a couple examples you might be unaware of.

As a matter of fact, Dresden was bombed after Hitler's death, jj (it was a punitive bombing with no strategic purpose).

I do find it rather puzzling though that the omelet & egg argument (which may or may not be valid) is invariably put forward when americans butcher civilians and that, when it is americans who turn out to be the victims of all this nonsense, fcp-ers drape themselves in outrage.

This is so often the case here that one gets the nagging sense that the reality is that american life is sacred (and also british as long as they lock in step) and the rest expandable.

Americans are very rarely in collateral damage incidents. We're either targets or we're a million miles away. When someone beheads a WSJ reporter because he's Jewish and American that's naturally a bit more philosophically charged than a missed chance at knocking off a terrorist honcho that results in the deaths of a couple nobodies.

By the way, a lot of those guys have little interest in Americans and are killing their coreligionists as they were in Iraq to a rate about 100 times ours. So, if anything we're trying to dispense justice for the locals we accidentally kill rather than killing them deliberately.

Anyway, I don't know why you trivialize what I say with omelet and egg. There's no alternative often. Read the thread in which I talk about military expedience here.

About the Palestinians, Pepe, you really need to take a hard look. The Egyptians and Saudis and everyone else want them all dead too. They are shit and you know it. If they quit throwing bombs for a couple weeks the Israelis would leave them alone. When Israel was playing nicey with them, they ganged up and got the Russians to come along. Hilariously those sick weak scumbags got the shit beat out of them.

They have no claim to respect.

Also, democracies are more natural allies than religious dictatorships are to democracies. If we have interests in the region, our natural ally is Israel and we should protect Isreal against its enemies way before ceding the whole region to religious fanatics.; 3/04/2008 1:06 AM
