The Hobbesian Cults

To worship, says Pepe, should be to scrape and bow and tremble and offer up penance and geld before the grandeur of the Wizard of Oz.

But all it does is prepare the way for a religion which is even more in love with sheer might than the effete Lords of Versailles. A religion that really knows how to bring men to the noble state of scraping, and bowing, and trembling, and offering up penance and geld before the grandeur of the Momo's Of Mecca. In the end, it will be the end of Pepe.

Citing chapter and verse from the Bible gets you in the slammer for 2 to 4 years in the Pepean Paradise. Slightly less than in the heyday of Stalin, where 10 to15 years in Vorkhuta was the standard, but hey, we're converging to the stable solution pioneered by the Left since the time of the Comité de salut public.

Seven years ago, George Weigel published a book called The Cube and the Cathedral, whose title contrasts two Parisian landmarks — the Cathedral of Notre Dame and the giant modernist cube of La Grande Arche de la Defense, commissioned by President Mitterrand to mark the bicentenary of the French Revolution. As La Grande Arche boasts, the entire cathedral, including its spires and tower, would fit easily inside the cold geometry of Mitterrand's cube. In Europe, the cube — the state — has swallowed the cathedral — the church.

Ulululululu, says Pepe, who also thinks that crappy cube looks better than Notre Dame Cathedral.
