Portugal Over Scotland This Evening

I captured this product of Portugal on sale some weeks back. Been waiting for the opportune time to sip a bit of it, as every now and then I get a strong hankering for some fortified wine. Tell your countrymen to keep it up, AA. Fonseca is great. It doesn't get great reviews here, but what the hell: I picked it up for something like fifteen bucks (like I said, on sale). And I'm uninterested in having others tell me what I ought to think about and taste from wine, beer and scotch.

Almost forgot: the Scotland reference was that I also captured a bottle of 12 year DeWars on sale as well. Opted for the port this evening...

The sale was just in time to give you some fightback against the Great Freeze, eh?

Fonseca is a good Port. Dunno why the reviews were out gunning for it. Maybe the work of the jealous Sherryistas.
Haven't had DeWar's in an aeon. Maybe it's time....

Funny you mention this -- I bought a bottle of Graham's a couple of weeks ago, also on sale for about 15 bucks. But it's not nearly as good as I remembered it to be -- kind of watery, and not substantial enough, if you know what I mean. I gotta go back and get some better hooch next time.

Never tried Fonseca. How does it compare to Graham's or Sandeman?

It depends on the year, and the particular line. A Graham's or a Fonseca can be a top of the line 100$ one, or so, down to the average stuff that goes for 12-16$. The Sandeman group is more toward the middle and lower end of the spectrum. There are many other "companies", representing various producers over the last four centures. The Symington clan owns many of these lines, and have a pretty sophisticated market setup in terms of the audience in mind for the many varieties.
If you ever make it to Porto, I highly recommend visiting their "Caves" in Vila Nova de Gaia, across the Douro River. You will get a right royal sense of what Port wine can be like.

Yes, the Great Freeze (which I'm calling November finally arriving in January) has come. I had a small dose of the Fonseca this evening, then tromped down to an opening at an art gallery. Anyhow, my goal is to sup this port in collaboration with some fine med-rare beef or lamb.

...and Tecs, you should give the old Fons a shot at least once. I mean, what does one really have to lose? (this is rhetorically, obviously, but I agree with AA and do think the Fonseca port purchase is worth a person's while).

Allright, it's a deal. Will give it a try once I finish the Graham's, and compare.

We will be here to hear your Fons report.
