Before the conifers and garland were ascribed with Christmas meaning, heathens and pagans had claim to bringing greenery into the house around the Winter Solstice.

The Yule log is yet another pagan tradition, again ripped off by Christianity. Local customs and such absorbed during the Christian proselytizing process.

Stop trying to beat us heathens and Infidels down, AI!

Besides, the Christmas tree and yule logs are my favorite part of the New Testament, just after the Easter Bunny.
